Outsourcing Data Entry
If you’re planning on doing analysis, but don’t necessarily have your data set at your fingertips, that doesn’t mean you have to wait to do your job. Just because the information you need isn’t yet in a database, doesn’t mean it can’t be. Something we’ve seen success with in the past is hiring data entry operators. These people make their living by finding whatever information you seek and organizing it in a database in a way that will be useful for analysis, querying, etc. They can help you change your data from one format to another (data conversion), translate text from images, format documents, process data from physical documents into electronic documents, or extract information from the web. A lot of this work is tedious, requiring lots of copying and pasting, but data entry professionals do this every day, so they’re very efficient at it. This allows businesses to free up other resources for analysis and decision making purposes.
As with most businesses, the client is king. If you need incredibly accurate data, money talks. We’ve found that the best way to get good results is to pay about a 10% premium on current market rates. Also, excel data entry workers who have a good command of the English language often work best, as there are fewer communication issues.
When you’re debating whether or not to hire someone else for your data entry needs – keep in mind how much time you’d spend on the same task. If your project is something that you could complete in an hour or two, it probably isn’t worth the time trying to find a good worker. However, if you have ongoing work (5 or more hours per week), these data entry professionals could be a great idea for you. While we don’t offer this service here (we’re based in the US), we can help provide the names of some great outsourcing services if that is what your project requires.
There are many great reasons to outsource data entry. We won’t go into it here, but it’s pretty amazing when people are working around the clock on your projects (in both the US and elsewhere). You can submit project requirements in before you go to sleep PST, and have your work completed by the time you arrive at work in the morning. Although there are many benefits, the bottom line is that hiring a data entry associate can significantly cut down the cost of your project.

You’ve got great insights about data entry work, keep up the good work!
